Earlier crop flowering caused by global warming alleviated by irrigation

چکیده

Abstract Enabling crop flowering within an optimal calendar window minimises long-term risk of abiotic stress exposure, improving prospects for attaining potential yield. Here, we define the period (OFP) as time in which frost, water and heat are collectively minimised. Using internationally-renowned farming systems model Agricultural Systems Production sIMulator, characterised combined effects climate change extreme climatic events on OFPs barley, durum wheat, canola, chickpeas, fababean maize from 1910 to 2021. We generate response surfaces irrigated dryland conditions using a range representative sowing times early late maturity genotypes. Global warming truncated lifecycles, shifting forward winter crops by 2–43 d environments, ?6–19 environments with irrigation. Alleviation irrigation delayed 3–25 or 11–30 crops, respectively, raising average yields 44%. Even so, was unable completely negate yield penalty caused crisis; peak respectively declined 24% 13% rainfed over 111 years simulation duration. conclude two important insights: (a) use broadens OFPs, providing greater flexibility likelihood realising compared (b), most preferable durations summer maximise early-sown long-season (late) later-sown short-season (early) types, respectively.

Extreme temperatures in Southeast Asia caused by El Niño and worsened by global warming

In April 2016, southeast Asia experienced surface air temperatures (SATs) that surpassed national records, exacerbated energy consumption, disrupted agriculture and caused severe human discomfort. Here we show using observations and an ensemble of global warming simulations the combined impact of the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon and long-term warming on regional SAT extremes. ...

Earlier nesting by loggerhead sea turtles following sea surface warming

The onset of spring, noted by the timing of wildlife migratory and breeding behaviors, has been occurring earlier over the past few decades. Here, we examine 15 years of loggerhead sea turtle, Caretta caretta, nesting patterns along a 40.5 km beach on Florida’s Atlantic coast. This small section of beach is considered to be the most important nesting area for this threatened species in the west...

Herbarium specimens demonstrate earlier flowering times in response to warming in Boston.

Museum specimens collected in the past may be a valuable source of information on the response of species to climate change. This idea was tested by comparing the flowering times during the year 2003 of 229 living plants growing at the Arnold Arboretum in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, with 372 records of flowering times from 1885 to 2002 using herbarium specimens of the same individual plants. Du...

Field-Based Estimates of Global Warming Potential in Bioenergy Systems of Hawaii: Crop Choice and Deficit Irrigation

Replacing fossil fuel with biofuel is environmentally viable from a climate change perspective only if the net greenhouse gas (GHG) footprint of the system is reduced. The effects of replacing annual arable crops with perennial bioenergy feedstocks on net GHG production and soil carbon (C) stock are critical to the system-level balance. Here, we compared GHG flux, crop yield, root biomass, and ...

Selection for Earlier Flowering Crop Associated with Climatic Variations in the Sahel

Climate changes will have an impact on food production and will require costly adaptive responses. Adapting to a changing environment will be particularly challenging in sub-Saharan Africa where climate change is expected to have a major impact. However, one important phenomenon that is often overlooked and is poorly documented is the ability of agro-systems to rapidly adapt to environmental va...
